I usually don’t post rumours because they usually are just wishful thinking. Even when they are from “inside sources” they often don’t pan out.
However the rumour this time around is the possibility that Nintendo may be considering entering the mobile phone market. I’ll admit I’m quite excited by this possibility and I have just one thing to say to Nintendo. I’m in.
Here is what Digitimes, who first posted the story, had to say.
“Despite the fact that gaming handsets are a niche-market segment, other players including Xiaomi, Vivo, Nintendo and Nubia are either strengthening their presence in the market or planning to enter it, said the sources.”
Nintendo has been winding down output if new games for their Nintendo 3DS handheld console and has been investing in original gaming content for mobile devices so it’s not that wild of a theory. And Nintendo, who has been riding the success of the Nintendo Switch for the last two years, has never been shy about trying new things.
A smart device from Nintendo would have to have some serious integration with the Switch and this would be a cool way to bring back Miiverse.
There have been speculations about Nintendo planning to launch a gaming handset that can integrate with its Switch consoles, the Japan-based vendor has yet to respond to such speculations.
