Dark Circle Comics’ new series The Shield will be in comic shops and online on October 21st, but we got a sneak preview at the first issue and I’m already hooked.<\/p>\n
Having no previous experience with the previous series I am seeing the new iteration with fresh eyes, which I actually prefer. Whereas every time an established comic or movie series is rebooted it is subject to sometimes unfair bias and critisicm, since I have no preconceived notions I can take an objective look at the book.<\/p>\n
Here’s a brief synopsis of the series and the first issue “Daughter of the Revolution, Part 1.”<\/p>\n
Since the dawn of the republic, whenever her country faces its blackest days, she returns: a spirit of the revolution sent to fight for what is right. But when she reappears for the first time in a generation with no memories\u2014not even of her own identity\u2014and encounters an evil force expecting her arrival, all the Shield can do is… run!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I don’t want to spoil what happens in the issue at all, but the story is the first half of the opening story arc. The art in the book is detailed, refined, realistic and very gritty. Filled with dreary and muted colours, they add to the dark and confused tone in the first set of pages. With the nameless main character not knowing who she is through the opening of the story, these dark tones really add to the feel of the story.<\/p>\n
This certainly looks like it’s going to be a dark series, which really suits the namesake of the publisher in Dark Circle Comics.<\/p>\n
