Nintendo released a new system update for the Nintendo 3DS today which brings new home menu colours as well as downloadable themes for your 3DS.

After the update you can now choose a colour and decorate your system’s background, icons, and folders. Five themes are available for your system at no charge. Simply tap the HOME Menu Settings icon in the upper left corner to change your theme.

And if you want even more customization, you can purchase special themes featuring Nintendo characters and games from the new Theme Shop. These include fan favorites such as Mario and The Legend of Zelda series—and many even come with music and sound effects. The themes range from $0.99 to $1.99 and there are fifteen to choose from so far.

Themes include Spotlight themes based on Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi. There is also a NES Jumping Mario theme, a Mighty Mushrooms theme as well as themes based on The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I personally downloaded the Zelda theme, which comes complete with unique folder icons based on treasure chests and also has the theme to The Legend of Zelda playing on the home menu.

All of the themes have specialized folder icons as well as music playing on the home menu. This latest addition to the 3DS is no doubt in preparation for the New Nintendo 3DS, which launches soon and also features fully customizable faceplates.

You can also access your screen brightness, power-saving mode, Nintendo 3DS image share and system settings from the new home menu. It’s also possible to use the d-pad to access the friend list, notifications, internet browser and Miiverse, which previously could only be done with the use of a stylus.
