I’ve always like Ace Attorney series, though I haven’t had the chance to play much of the series. It’s one of those fondnesses that happens from afar. I’ve played some here and there, but have always enjoyed what I’ve played.

The latest game in the series Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice arrives for the Nintendo 3DS today, exclusively in the eShop. While I haven’t had a chance to play the full game yet, I did play through the demo.

It’s time to embark on a legal adventure in the new came with co-stars Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice.

The game once again has you taking the role of Phoenix Wright, and later Apollo Justice, as you work to defend your clients. You’ll pour over evidence, cross-examine crazy witnesses, and try to uncover the truth.

The game sees Phoenix in a brand new location: a courtroom situated in the Kingdom of Khura’in. This new region has a different style of prosecution with the Kurain Channeling Technique, where mysterious séance trials decide the fate of all defendants. The visions presented in the séance trials lets the court revisit the last moments of a victim’s life

The séance trials created a pretty cool new mechanic. Not only are you dealing with all of the previous methods for proving your client’s innocence, but you also need to find inconsistencies in the visions of Rayfa, the Royal Priestess.

We get a taste of this new kind of trial in the demo.

Meanwhile, defense attorney Apollo Justice faces his own challenges holding down the fort at the Wright Anything Agency, as he takes on a case that will have explosive implications.

The game once again has twisting plots and puzzling cases, as well as many colourful characters.

As with previous games, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice looks beautiful. As someone who has recently been watching the anime, it was nice to see the opening of the game fully animated. Not only that, but all of the character models in the game look exactly like their drawn counterparts, so all of the motions of the characters feel smooth like it’s also part of the anime.

All of the unique and quirky sound effects and expressions are also well represented in the game. The game looks like a lot of challenging fun!

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice is available today digitally on the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS. The game retails for $39.99 CAD.

Those who purchase the game within the first week of release will be treated to a free character costume pack. The pack includes intimidating attire based on the loan shark Furio Tigre for Phoenix, a studious school uniform for Apollo, and an all-frills waitress costume from the series’ French restaurant Trés Bien for Athena.

After September 14, the costume pack will be available to purchase for $0.99 USD.

There is also planned DLC for the game releasing every Thursday through the end of September. Players can look forward to the release of two short stories, each bundled with a unique pixel art Nintendo 3DS theme, followed by the release of a full-length extra episode titled “Turnabout Time Traveler.” More details are forthcoming for those.

9/15 – “Phoenix Wright: Asinine Attorney” short story and 3DS theme ($3.99 USD)
9/22 – “Apollo Justice: Asinine Attorney” short story and 3DS theme ( $3.99 USD)
9/29 – “Turnabout Time Traveler” full-length extra episode ($5.99 USD)
