At first glance you might consider Puzzle and Dragons Z to just be another typical game in this genre. Really though, thanks to collecting monsters of different elements and requiring them to attack, it does a great job of mixing things up! What we should touch on first is that the main title Puzzle and Dragons by GungHo is available for IOS and Android… however you shouldn’t play that before the 3DS title.

The mobile free-to-play Puzzle and Dragons throws you into a fast paced set of dungeon after dungeon with a quite frequent flood of surprising rewards. Meanwhile the 3DS game is more of a story based and slower paced title that gives gamers a full Mario campaign to play through as well as an RPG or sort of Pokémon inspired take on Puzzle and Dragons to play through. These are two separate games included on one cart.

After you’ve experienced the rush of the mobile game, Puzzle and Dragons Z can feel like getting off the bus and walking the rest of the way to where you’re going. The main thing you need to do in this metaphor is look around and enjoy your surroundings. Or more literally speaking, relax and enjoy the storyline. The mobile Puzzle and Dragons is more similar in many ways to Pokémon shuffle than Puzzle and Dragons Z. Until very recently, Puzzle and Dragons Z didn’t have the free DLC dungeons that makes the mobile game so addictive. Fortunately the recent Nintendo Direct Micro announced that these free downloads are now available for the game! This is a huge game changer and a big plus since limited time dungeons are a big draw of the mobile version. At least this change does bring them closer to the same playing field.

Put your mobile version aside for a moment, lets talk about Puzzle and Dragons Z. The first option you’re given is what title you want to play first. I found that I could progress slightly father in the Mario version before the difficulty started getting up there, but the Puzzle and Dragons Z version allows you to get some more pointers along the way in a faster pace it seems. As much of a struggle as it may be, I’d recommend starting with Puzzle and Dragons Z.

Like in Pokémon you start with the choice of a boy or girl. In this case they are Dragon Tamers. Monsters in this world end up dropping occasionally in battle as eggs. You’ll take these eggs back to base to turn into monsters. As you progress, you’ll be able to use more tech at the base to do things like use eggs to level up your monsters, or even evolve new creatures. This too is a bit of a slowdown from the mobile version which just instantly hatches all your eggs when a dungeon is completed. However, unlike the mobile version, you can hold many more monsters in storage. So there is a balance.

The story goes that a group called Paradox has split up the world into jigsaw piece chunks and you need to bring it back together again. It’s played out as more of a huge initiative, so you’re a big player while two of your friends also dungeon run at the same time (though this is more for story) and HQ is busy focusing on all the chaos around the world. You’ve run into a little talking dragon buddy that I chose to name Syrup. I’m not sure if you’re friends wacky longer name can actually be picked however, so his only name may be Syrup. Due to your little buddy and his ability to open some ancient doors, you two make a great team for this mission to reunite the world.

Gameplay is surprisingly involved, allowing you to choose a team of monsters as well as a helper to join you into dungeons. In traditional RPG format, you’ll face off against foes head on. Unlike usual, you’ll be matching three or more orbs to do as such. You’ll also need a monster of the elements you’ll be focusing on in each dungeon. More similar element monsters means more damage however. But, if you’re missing an element, matching orbs of that type won’t net you any attack. There are also heart blocks which when matched restore your HP by a certain amount. On top of all that, the more combos you make in a row as the pieces fall or connect after a move session, the higher your damage and healing will be.

Why do I call it a move session? Unlike Pokémon Shuffle, you’re not swapping pieces here. Think of it as dragging a stick through water. You’ll move an orb and the orbs in that direction move behind your orb. So you’re essentially dragging an orb around the screen and pushing all the other orbs behind you as you go. Each time you start this, you’ll have a limited amount of time to drag around however. This creates a whole different dynamic to the game. At first it can seem difficult, but HQ even has some training programs to play through to help you recognize patterns on the board that can help create more matches.

Branching paths are even added to dungeons and you’re tasked with matching orbs of the corresponding color to select which way you want to go. Sometimes you may not have that color available and that’s one of the reasons skills can come into play. Skills are abilities that let you do different things per monster, such as changing orbs to another element or healing your HP pool a bit. You’ll have to wait awhile to use them again too. Your team also has a leader you designate that has passive abilities.

Puzzle and Dragons Z has a lot of charm. Familiar faces from the mobile version are reimagined into this release. Monsters are animated and full of life which is different than the static (but very beautiful) sprites of the mobile game. I’m quite into the main series game in this cart over the Mario Edition. Unfortunately as nice as it is that you can wander many Mario worlds via a world map and fight some foes from the series, the roster feels too small. I get that part of Puzzle and Dragons is evolving monsters, so it’s difficult to do in some cases since a Goomba isn’t going to become something completely unlike itself, but to keep me coming back I need the rest of the Mario universe in there. I don’t know if the team was limited when making the Mario Edition but it would have been a fantastic time to finally have a Mario universe crossover my childhood self has been craving. I wish enemies like Tatanga, Birdo, Shy Guys, and the like had been included. Please Nintendo, in the future exploit my nostalgia! Content like that would completely floor me as a gamer. Unfortunately the list included is pretty safe. Though I did like having a Blooper on my team.

Mario not having more enemies doesn’t devalue my score for this game. It’s still a wonderful title and Puzzle and Dragons Z is an adventure that adds detail and story to an otherwise direct and gameplay focused mobile title. Just as I said, remember, the mobile game is a faster paced excitement fest and the 3DS title is a slower adventure meant to be taken at a relaxed pace. If you haven’t played either, I’d highly recommend playing this 3DS release first.
